Old Chute route on Hood

Old Chute route on Hood

Here's a good view of the Hogsback and the old chute variation on Hood. It breaks to the left below cliffs about 2/3 up the Hogsback and is the standard route on Hood during my visit in 5/07.

Amazing!

This shot takes the cake. I'm just heading down there in a few days for my first time. Reading your report has gotten me excited. Thanks for posting!

Should be in a guide book...

...so great is this well lit shot of the bulk of the route. Is this upper portion round the unseen bend any steeeper than the Pearly Gates londell? (Not the right fork but staying left within the two gates) Great report, guess rockfall wasn't a factor on your nice ascent . Super, nice job.

Re: Should be in a guide book...

Hi, Joel:

I don't think the Old Chutes route got any steeper than the low 40's, although I didn't measure it. I'm sure conditions vary depending on how icy it is. There's a pic of the upper route in my TR. I didn't measure it, but I felt comfortable downclimbing facing out. I haven't done the Pearly Gates, but I bet it is steeper.
