Old steps carved in the rock called "Steinschleuder" at the Bastei, Saxon Switzerland

The steps date back to the Middle Ages, when there was a castle, called in German Felsenburg Neurathen.

What an adventurous way of access! Was that maybe a secret escape path or so?

No, just to simplify the way up. Some thought that in the Middle Ages they used the top of that stone as a base to catapult missiles like stone bullets on enemies. It belongs to the rock castle Neurathen next to the Bastei, in fact, this rock is next to the Bastei bridge.
