Old survey tripod

Old survey tripod

Often in Nevada, you will find these old wooden tripod structures that were used by the geological survey team.

Can you tell me...

Last winter I encountered a number of these old survey tripods on desert peaks as well as what appeared to be old battery packs and decaying battery tubes. The batteries were extremely old, like nothing I've ever seen before. Most of them were on summits between Las Vegas and the greater Los Angeles area. Do you have any idea what those might have been used for?

Re: Can you tell me...

I don't have an answer for what the battery packs were used for. Maybe John Vitz or Gordon MacLeod might know the answer. Anyone?

Re: Can you tell me...

Often all that was left was the graphite rod, however sometimes there was a partially decayed matrix. My guess is that it had something to do with either early radios or telegraph technology. Everything I've looked into suggests 1920's "dry cell" batteries.

Batteries

Here is a photo of some of the batteries I found. How could I contact John Vitz or Gordon MacLeod to ask them?

Re: Batteries

I'll send you John's email addy and then perhaps he can send you Gordon's if John doesn't know. I'll look it up and get it to you in a PM.
