The eTrex Venture offers a worldwide database of cities and increased internal memory. It is also one of three eTrex units that are designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections.

The memory capacity of one megabyte allows the eTrex Venture to accept downloaded information from GARMIN's new MapSourceĀ® Points of Interests CD-ROM. The CD enables users to download locations such as restaurants, hotels, shopping, and entertainment. Once the information is loaded into the unit, you can make a selection and telephone and address information for a particular point of interest will appear on the screen. The CD also includes marine data such as lights, buoys, wrecks and obstructions. The eTrex Venture comes housed in a stylish, translucent green case.

With the exception of the yellow etrex, the whole Garmin etrex line is great - just depends on what bells and whistles you want. I have 6 of these for a GPS surveying course I teach. I use theses to teach the basics before students stat working with the Trimble mapping units.

What's impressive is how good these units are, especially with WAAS enabled, for the cost. They are easy to use and the menus are for the most part intuitive. Batteries last reasonably long and if you use lithium AA, then cold is less of a factor.

I am not totally fond of the toggle switch - I think that it could fail after a while, but after 3 years of use by 30 students over 22 weeks, all 6 units are still working just fine.

I have found the Garmin Venture easy to use, accurate and dependable. The menus and pages are self explanatory and simple enough for beginners.

While simple, this GPS has all the features i need. It easily marks waypoints, plots routes, and shows your "track" on the map as you move. Its computer measures your distance traveled, moving speed, average travel time, altitude, and compass bearing. The map feature pans easily and has a large zoom range.

The only complaint i would have would be battery life. I did find batteries to be exhausted in as little as 8 hours of continuous use when exposed to temperatures in the 20's to 30's F. This may be more of a problem with the batteries than the GPS however.
