The Orinoco Water Purifier is a combination sports bottle/EPA-registered purifier; it removes cryptosporida, giardia, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. Purifying water is a matter of dipping the bottle in whichever stream, lake, or pond is handy, and drinking out of it as you would any other sports bottle.

Okay, so maybe filtering/purifying stream water isn't really necessary throughout much of California's Sierra, where I spend most of my time, but this bottle makes it so easy that I do it anyway just for the peace of mind it affords. This is hands-down the slickest filter/purifier on the market. Others must think so, too, because using it attracts more comments and questions from people around than any other piece of gear I own. Purifying water really is as simple as claimed.

The water flow is obviously not as strong as a conventional sports bottle, but is adequate. I generally view this as somewhat of a positive, as it encourages moderation as I try to conserve water along dry stretches of the trail--if I drink from a Nalgene, for example, I tend to drink too much, too quickly. Some may find this inconvenient in dry country, and thus prefer the hassle of a conventional filtering system.

The only minor problem I've had with my first bottle was that it started dripping after a year or two's use, probably as I overtightened the cap; I've replaced the bottle with another, which is still going strong. But this is really a minor quibble for an exceptional product.

In my opinion, this is a must-buy. REI often has it available for $30-35 during their periodic sales.

This is a great addition to any day hike or over night outing. Have you ever been on a long hike and run out of water? With this product that will not happen and you will beable to tap the natural resources out there and not have to worry about any contamination. No tablets or waiting time. Filler up and enjoy. The only negatives with this product are the expense of the filters and sometimes a new filter can be a bit of a pain to prime.
