The northern section of Petrified Forest National Park, AZ, is commonly referred to as the Painted Desert. And most of the backcountry area of Painted Desert (and a smaller area in the southern section, as well) is accessible for day use (no permit required), or for overnight use (with a permit). The area shown by this photo is open for such use. The photo was shot from Pintado Point, along the northwest corner of the road through the park. The dry streambed in the photo is Lithodendron Wash. Access into the wilderness use area is at Kachina Point, located about one-half mile to the east. Imaged in December 2009.
