Painted Wall, Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Painted Wall, Black Canyon of the Gunnison

This is the view of Painted Wall from the south rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO. At 2,250 feet, this is the highest cliff in the state. The next day after taking this image, Curtis and I would drive around to the North Rim and hike the trail to Exclamation Point, at the top of Painted Wall, and on to Green Mountain (off the image to the right). Imaged in August 2006.

Re: Very...

Thanks for looking, Romek. That was taken with a 17-mm lense. I was wishing I'd brought the 10-mm lense, though, because there's a bit more of the wall to the right, and I could have included Green Mountain's summit (just off the image to the right). --mark d.

Re: Have you or...

I must say that I have not hiked to the river. But, at the South Portal I've driven down and spent the night. I do have a way cool image of a campsite at the bottom, but it's not currently on SP. I'd put it in the Awesome Campsites and Bivouacs album, but I thought that would be crass since I didn't camp there myself.

Regardless, I do have some info about "hiking" (use that word cautiously!) to the bottom. And, since SP has no Black Canyon of the Gunnison page, I'm thinking of starting one until such time as someone more knowledgeable volunteers to take it over (or collaborate on it). So much to do, so little time!

P.S.--You might check with Mountain Jim here on SP. He has a similar photo with a route that he's climbed. Maybe he has info on hiking into the canyon.
