It was supposed to be a day with spot showers, clearing up later. The hike started out cool and overcast. As I hiked it got warmer and I shed some layers down to my t-shirt. However, when I reached the summit, the wind picked up, clouds descended, and it started snowing like crazy. I was well-prepared, and enjoyed the adventurous hike through blowing snow back to the car. It was a good reminder of how the weather can change in an instant in the mountains! Great little hike. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Since living in Albuquerque, I've lost some of my Washington State perseverance. Its true, yesterday, I wimped out on the Pino trail due to some wet stuff falling from those puffy white things in the sky. What is that stuff again? Anyway, due to my knees starting to hurt from lack of activity and general restlessness, I decided I had to grab some peak today. So I drove out to Palomas. I almost turned back when the rain started to fall harder, then I came to my senses, and decided to go for it.
Nice trail all the way to the top. The trail starts about 100 feet up the road, not at the barriers (the fallen trees on the other trail are you clue). I think it was 48 minutes to the top. Nice little hike. Really nice view of the South Mountain area and the Northern Sandias even in the rain. I found the hike a nice reminder of my days in the Washington Cascades, which was welcome due to the scorching temperatures I've become accustom to in Albuquerque. Enjoy this one, it is an easy walk up all the way to the top.
The trail is great and easy to follow all the way to the top! 52 min. up, 44 down, on a beautiful if breezy fall day. Will have to return to this peak, both to hike/run, and to give climbing through the cliff band a try.
The first measurable moisture in the ABQ area in over 78 days brought 3 inches of fluffy white stuff to the back side of the Sandias. Great hike, getting ready for a big climbing season over here.
Wonderfully cool, overcast day. Checked out the cliffs and climbed up through a weakness, took the trail down.
