Allalinhorn

Allalinhorn seems huge from Britannia Hütte. Nor as from Mittelallalin rgg

Re: Allalinhorn

Yep, that's true.

We had climbed the mountain the easy way, by the normal route from Mittelallain and then came down the Hohlaub ridge, which you can see in this picture. Still very scenic, but it takes less energy than the other way around, which is how most people do the traverse. Still, a highly recommended route either way!

Re: Allalinhorn

Yep though that ridge is not PD. Isn't it rgg?

Re: Allalinhorn

Not quite, but not far off either.

According to my guidebook (the 2012 edition of the Gebietsführer Walliser Alpen) that ridge is PD+.

Note that the route does not go up the rock face; it mostly follows the snowy ridge at the top of it. The bottom part of the route isn't visible in this picture, but the ridge is gained fairly easy from the right hand side.

The crux is the rock step almost at the top of the ridge. And just above it is a very short but steep bit of snow. Without these two bits I reckon the grade would be easier than PD, either F+ or PD-.

You know how it is with these route grades; what you actually get depends on the conditions at the time. Even though it was very late in the season, there was some snow on the rocks, making it a mixed bit of climbing, and in the conditions we encountered I agree with the PD+ rating. However, with clean, dry rocks it must be easier, maybe just PD.
