Eerie  Sucess!

There was so much smoke blowing in from the Ferguson Fire that you couldn't even see the Sierra. The pale orange sky really made it seem like the surface of Mars.

Very cool  Sucess!

Standard Route, Plug  Sucess!

Thought I saw lights! No. It was obsidian reflecting the afternoon sun.

Interesting Hike  Sucess!

In September, 1996. My wife and I hiked around the rim and then hiked to the top of the central peak. Highly recommended.

Fun Diversion  Sucess!

Took the plug trail and enjoyed the amazing geology of this little diversion near Mono Lake. Free-climbed the first tower you reach as you enter the crater. I'd call it class 4 or easy 5, but if someone else has an opinion let me know.

This was the only "peak" we managed due to the crappy weather. Far cry from Boundary/Montgomery (option A), Glass Mtn Ridge (option B) and Crater Mtn/South Crater (option C). Oh, well...

Panum Crater  Sucess!

Hiked up to Panum Crater after spending a week in Yosemite. Mono Lake reminds me of the Great Salt Lake plus the tufa.

obsidian cuts  Sucess!

Managed to cut myself badly enough on the glass to require 5 stitches.

I was part of a scientific drilling group that put a corehole through Obsidian Dome, the dike between Obsidian and Deadman, and the dike by the craters.

Geological marvel  Sucess!

Very interesting, quick hike up and into a dormant volcano. Anybody with just a remote interest in geology will enjoy this hike. Did the rim and plug trail on a beautiful day in March.
