Parnassius apollo

Parnassius apollo

The name was unknown for me, but Gangolf solved any problem! I met the butterfly on the trail towards the Punta Pousset (Gran Paradiso group, Graian Alps)- August 2008

Parnassius apollo

... or simply Apollo in its English name. One of the most beautiful European butterflies. There is also Parnassius phoebus, the Small Apollo, which is very similar. The latter has rings on the shafts of its antlers and quite often a red dot on the fornt wings. I don't see the rings when I magnify your picture so I think it's P. apollo.

Never seen one myself :-(
