Re: Oh-mi-god!

Thanks Nelson, I appreciate that. And sorry I didn't e-mail back afterwards. We had a great trip, even though we never actually made it to the tarns like we hoped. Bummer. Too out of shape, and carrying way too much photo gear. Not a good combo for me right now. :) We hauled all our 4"x5" gear up there, and didn't use it once. Still, we did shoot this sunset from back at the trailhead, so it all worked out OK I think.

It was great to meet Barry (ATTM). He's kinda crazy though, doing that long traverse that day. ;) Amazing for sure. Thanks again for all your good info and help in our planning. Take care!

Great shot

Nice work. 2-stop or 3-stop graduated ND filter? Looks like an incredible place.

Re: Great shot

jhansen007, you nailed it on the first one, it's a 2 stop split ND filter, soft edge. Don't know how I'd do without that one! Thanks!

Re: Great shot

You did a great job hiding the transition. Was this shot on 4x5 equipment?

Re: Great shot

Thanks again Josh. I've been getting better at using the split ND in the past year or so. Always have a hard time figuring out exactly where to put it.

Yup. it was 4"x5". I shoot with a Wista 45DX wooden field camera:

I've had it for about 14 years, and love the thing. Looking at a 4"x5" Velvia transparency on a lightbox is almost a religious experience. :) The film tends to cost too damn much, but it's worth it usually.

Re: ND Filter?

DId you spend the big bucks for a Singh-Ray ND filter, or go some other route? I have their 2 stop soft edge ND, but don't use it as often as I should. I figured the soft edge was more forgiving to use. I used a permanent marker to put little ticks marks on the edge of the filter to indicate the 1/2, 1/4, and 1/3 split locations, which helps when using it in dim light.

Re: ND Filter?

Yup Nelson, I sprang for the Singh-Ray a couple years ago. Alot of $$, but been worth it for sure. I've seen too many people that shot with cheap plastic ones, and got ugly color shifts, so thought I'd save up for one of those. You should have seen my face when I dropped it one day on some rocks!!! Yikes. Scratched it, but luckily can work around that. Next on the list is a 3-stop for those real contrasty situations. That will have to wait til the next big image sale though. :)

Excellent Photo

Brent,
This is perhaps my favorite Gore photo on SP. Thank you so much for submitting it. It is featured prominently on the Gore Range page.

Re: Excellent Photo

Thanks a lot Jon! Appreciate that. I sure want to get into the Gores more in the future. All I've really done so far is Pitkin Lake, and a hike 4-5 miles in past Piney Lake. It'll happen one of these days!!
