Ninety minutes from the main trail to Marcy which was really slow but I became aware on this hike that my ankle was still upset with me from the hike on Macomb two days prior. Not including the two meal breaks on the summits it was eight hours and ten minutes round trip for Tabletop and Phelps from the Loj. Excellent view of Tabletop Mtn from the top of Phelps.
A little muddy at the top, but the trail is great as are the views.
After enduring the crowds on Algonquin this peak us a nice change of pace. Open slab on the Summit is warmed nicely in the fall sun to give a relaxing spot for lunch. Great views of Marcy.
Great early spring hike but no views and very wet.
This was a great climb....the winds were fierce, 70mph+. But as usual it was worth it. The hike from the dam was mot bad and I really liked the unique vies of Marcy and Gonk. Not a bad treed summit. Too bad the weather was such a bear, I was looking forward to a day that would include TT and Marcy. But settling for Phelps and a nude dip in the Phelps Brook(?) by the HighWater Bridge made the day great.
First treed summit
Phelps and Tabletop Solo. #2 Winter with Dan and Bill Feb. 4, 2009.
Cold, blustery day with tons of ice on the trail and still loads of fun! Pretty awesome view, although it was my first summit so perhaps my opinion is biased....met some great folks along the trail, as always!
Hiked Phelps Mountain 4161' early, starting at 5:30am from the Adirondack Loj. Trail was great and packed down so we opted not to use snowshoes. The way up was easy compared to many of the peaks I've done and was enjoyable after the difficult ascent of Mount Washington, NH last week. The view at the summit was spectacular, with clear shots of Marcy to the left and Algonquin to our right. Clear blue skies with a temp. around 38F at the Loj. A great start to the weekend.
4' of snow at the summit. Beautiful day with amazing view towards Marcy.
Not exactly sure of the month I did this one, but it was a side hike after a failed attempt to climb Marcy with the wrong gear. I learned the hard way!
The first real peak I climbed, along with Tabletop on the same weekend. A great start with the leadership and inspiration of a great Scout leader. (Check the photo of my genuine "Dear Grace" letter (in green ink, of course!)
A cold wintery hike that took about 3 hours. The snow was light by the dam and the temp was hovering in the low 30's. The summit accumulated about 9'' of snow and the temp dropped into the teens. A nice hike to break into the cold weather.
Hike it Early in the day, very quiet and peaceful.
During my descent from Mount Marcy, I took this short side-hike to Phelps Mountain. Nothing special; just another peak.
Started at 2am from the Loj for a Great Range traverse. Weather was decent enough until we crossed treeline. Atop Marcy there was 20-30ft visibility, high winds, and very slick rocks -- not at all safe traverse weather! We turned back, hit Phelps on the way back, and took a (freezing!) dip in the river just above Marcy Dam.
Great view of the high peaks, especially in early fall
Well worth the effort.
My first trip up to the High Peaks after the storm, trails were in good condition. Nice views from summit. Spent time hopping around in Phelps Brook on the way down, poked around mostly dried up Marcy Dam, then off to the Cascade Lakes for kayaking.
Caught the sunset on Phelps and it was remarkable! Fun peak.
