Route Climbed: Standard route Date Climbed: July 10, 2002
My parents came to visit me in July 2002. We went into the ADK High Peaks region and did some hiking. My Mom came with us as far as Marcy Dam and then read a book while my Dad and I climbed Phelps Mt
After a two hour climb, we reached the summit of Phelps where we had one of the best views ever! The weather was so clear, and temperatures were in the 60s. Hiking with my father and mother. A Perfect Day!!!
Route Climbed: Phelps Trail Date Climbed: 10/17/02
Challenging climb and also my first.. see my trip report. Trail was a total washout, very stream-like, rain most of the time, and when combined with left-over snow and leaf-fall on the rocks, the descent was particularly dicely, esp with pack and all.
Started at head of Phelps Mount trail at about 1:38pm, and when I decided to turn back it was 3pm; estimate about 50 ft or so from summit but recogniziing sunset time to be about 6:20, I wanted to make camp in good time. Temperature was about 35 at beginning of Phelps, but below 30 when I headed down; also at high elevation I could not see any surrounding mountains due to fog/cloud banks.
On descent, my Annapurnas held up nicely on exposed rock even with the stream-water runoff, but snow-covered and leafy rock was slipperly. Descent required some self-belaying for increased comfort/safety. Not the ideal bouldering conditions.
