100m or 120m x 7.5, 8.0, or 8.5mm is actually a somewhat popular rope choice for long routes or alpine routes, usually in places that are known to have lots of rope snagging rappells.

It would be pretty dumb to have a 9.5 or 10.0 long rope. With half or twin technique it makes sense, sometimes.

squishy wrote:Why not? With the new sub 9.5mm ropes the weight would be the same as a 60m 11mm right? But, you could do 50m raps in places like the valley were that would work well and you can link two pitches together whenever you want, and you only need to take one rope...

Use double ropes, you can get the same effect.

I do think it's stupid to go for 70 m ropes.... yes you can do long pitches, but short raps.

Assuming the same rope material, a 9.5mm x 100m rope would weigh about 1.24 times as much as a 11mm x 60m rope. For the same weight, you would need to have the 100m rope at 8.5mm.

Plus rope drag would probably be much worse considering all the extra gear placements.
