These crust over sugar conditions are a bummer to hump through on a steep alpine slope. They do, however, provide an excellent source of melt so you don't have to drink your own urine. Always a plus.

In spite of the difficulties (and change of plans), i'm still glad I went... but then I live in SoCal, and needed a Sierra fix. The Spring conditions were nice (as the various pics show), and only seeing one other person out there the entire weekend was an added bonus.

ODD about all this "postholing" stuff.

Had 14 students last weekend above the Mammoth Lakes/Rock area, traveled well over 4 miles total up and down different routes, both days and NOT one person postholed.

Gee, if I went where there were roads to walk or the cover was only a few inches, *I* probably wouldn't posthole, either...

I have to admit to swimming thru crotch-deep but not long days; without 2 consequetive days off, I can't risk an unplanned bivy.... next month is a different story. I have made some of the finest thigh holes in Mammoth Basin this year and am sporting a new scar from being eaten by a tree-well.
Now - regrouping from Plan A to climb/ski Round Top on Thurs to... ? So much new snow up here!!

Deb, Kurt posted up a pic claiming 6 new inches of snow. Is that what you see where you are?

Without a doubt! I walked thru 5" at Eagle this morning. Mammy is reporting 6-10" (the top neveropened yesterday but skiing Outpost area was golden), Kirkwood supposedly got 10" as well. Coming up 395 at 6AM, those Convict peaks are in winter coats but the sun is coming out. I'd suspect high els will hold more than half of recent fall, so post-holing will be primo. It sorta quit snowing abt 9AM today. Cold!
I've decided to ski off backside into Red's Meadow tomorrow, should be stellar!

Lakes above 10K are still frozen over with up to 24" of snow covering the ground in many locations..

Showed these photos to my old climbing buddy, he said these are some mid summer conditions, must of been a light snow winter out there in Sierra.

Interesting take. My guess is some noobs got out there on the early snow too early, probably broke it all off before a proper snow layer could form.

Shet.

Geezus, all this postholing/snowshoeing nonsense. Just learn to X-C (ski) and be happy (in your work).
