Cottonwood Lakes/New Army Pass conditions?

by Funyan005 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 5:57 pm

Dry winter and I'm hoping to get out before the skeeters ruin any enjoyment, anyone know conditions out that way?

Inyo County Roads said they think the road will open on the 27th, but to check to make sure before heading up there.

Anybody know if the road opened on the 27th, or what the snow conditions are like in and around the meadows?

No, it wasn't open on the 27th. I'll bet the road will be open soon though.

Good luck! Post up a conditions/trip report when ya get back. My unemployed schedule is currently giving me quite a big amount of free time to do some big trips, and I love the cottonwood lakes area!

Hmm... thanks for the info, I'll try making some phone calls. I was under the impression that it was roughly the same road to whitney portal (which I thought was open). Maybe I'm wrong, haven't been up there in a few years.

Different road than whitney portal. I called the IAVC friday (the 4th) and was told by the forest service that inyo county roads had told them on the third that it would be opened either the 3rd or the 4th. He said it was not open on the 3rd so they (forest service) were hoping for the 4th.

Bump... Any word? I'm also wondering how the snow is around Cottonwood lakes? Does anyone think snowshoes would be necessary for a trip up Langley via Old Army or New Army?

I am just guessing, but I would say no need for snowshoes. The ground is normaly dry in the basin by early june and it is a light snow year. You will probably need pons and ax for old army though. New army is generaly corniced in early season but you can bypass it off trail to the west. I have not been up that way yet this year though so I am pulling this all out of ....
