Sorry to hear about your injury. I've been slowly making my way back from a 2 year battle with plantar fasciitis. Although that's a whole nuther can o worms, my first inclination was to suggest, like Petro - custom insoles. Go to a podiatrist and have them made properly (have you been to a foot doc about this?). They will probably run you about $400, I know... steep, but if I added up the cost of all the over the counter insoles I bought trying to find a solution on my own, I now realize I should have taken my docs advice and just pony up and gotten the orthotics in the first place. Another suggestion, nothing lower than mid height boots. I know braces are a PIA especially if you are trying to squeeze them in boots. Best of luck... getting old SUCKS, don't it?!?

Custom insoles are not recommended. (although many podiatrists will be happy to sell you some) Any insole that is angled enough to prevent some supinations will exacerbate the injury when you do roll your ankle.

Also, despite the hearsay and what advertisers say, most high cut hiking boots provide little support to prevent supinations. They would have to be very high, very tight, and very stiff in order to prevent rolling your ankles. And if they were that high tight and stiff, they would also greatly reduce the normal flexion and extension that you need.

Get one of the braces, and some low cut hiking shoes. They make it almost impossible to roll your ankle, give you full flexion and extension and you'll also enjoy the benefits of lighter shoes.

I almost always wear light (low-cut) shoes, except when using crampons. Yes, I've rolled my ankle more in higher boots, than in low shoes. The biggest correlation for turning my ankle, is the use of shoes/boots with high and narrow heels.

I've tried wearing various braces with low boots, really I have; I have a friend who has had a similar injury, and she has searched hard for braces. Both of us find braces unpleasant to wear in boots/shoes of any kind.

Perhaps I have just not found the right non-tape ankle brace; but I swear I can get more secure bracing by a good tape job, than from any brace I've tried (not including totally stiff braces).

I've started with foot weights, agility-type exercises, and so on; we'll see how that goes.
