Green Butte Ridge 5-21/22

What's up Summitposters

Thought I'd float the idea of hitting Green Butte Ridge next weekend. I was up there yesterday but mismanaged my ridge camp a bit, storm hit, and some of my gear got soaked. (It didn't help I was holed up in a bivy sack!) I noticed a good amount of snow was deposited on the lee side of the ridge which also made me nervous about pursuing the climb. It would be great if I could find and learn from a partner experienced with snow camping and recognizing acceptable / dangerous climbing conditions. I'd be willing to haul some extra gear in exchange for a few pointers!

I think it's a bit late in the year to go for Green Butte and conditions will change fast in the spring, but the ridge looked pretty sweet after the storm cleared yesterday:

A few other details:
1) I've climbed some steep routes in the past like Red Slate north couloir and Casaval Ridge
2) I noticed a storm forecast for next weekend so will have to keep an eye on that
3) It's a full moon next weekend...alpine start could be memorable
4) I just moved to Sacramento and am looking for people to hit the mountains with in general.

Send me a message if any of that sounds good!
Jeff

I was going to head up this weekend... looking to do some new stuff on less traveled routes but Green Butte is a good one.

But the forecast is not good!

Yeah the forecast is a bummer! Storms are hitting right on the weekends lately.

I would be open to exploring a less frequently traveled route on Shasta, even if making the summit is not so likely with the bad weather.

It looks like storms are forecast for the Sierra as well, but not until Saturday night. With the Tioga Rd opening tomorrow might be possible to hit Dana Couloir early Saturday with the short approach. Then again...would we want to be parked at the pass before a big storm?? hmmm...probably best to wait and see if the forecast changes.

What new stuff? Is there still anything on Mt Shasta you have not climbed? :)

Not much left. Main new item is Red Fir Ridge. I'd also like to see how far up Mud Creek Canyon it is safe to go and then somehow get from there to the summit. After that there is literally nothing left until I can get some folks ready for Konwakiton Glacier.

Last year I did a pretty cool trip up Watkins Glacier. Once the snow melts off it is a neat little spot... unexpected surprise.
