How much snow on Bison Peak/ Lost Creek Wilderness?

by Niederbayer » Mon Nov 23, 2009 6:28 pm

thinking about hiking up to Bison Peak in the Lost Creek Wilderness - anyone been up there in the last days?

How much snow can I expect and do I need snow shoes - or is the path compacted enough that I can do it with my boots and gaitors?

thanks

My dad was up at our cabin near taryall this weekend and said there was not much snow if this helps. I was in bailey blasting last week and there was almost no snow near the road.

What day are you thinking of going?

Judging from the area around me (25 miles SE of Bison @ 9100'), you will not need snowshoes and could probably get by without gaitors. I have a few inches on the ground, up to about a foot in places in the trees. I was up to about 10,000' on Thursday with about the same conditions as by my house. Take the gaitors, leave the snowshoes at home.

I climbed Peak X last Friday and there was a surprising amount of snow in the trees and willows. In drifts I was up to my knees. However, snowshoes would have been next to useless. Just a little more work than usual. BTW, the road was tracked and still drivable to the trailhead.
