Mammoth Cave NP improvements

For those of you who enjoy caving in Mammoth Cave, or for midwesterners getting a backpacking fix in the backcountry, you might be interested in plans to revamp the Green River ferry:

http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome ... ctID=13701

Goals:
- Reduce closures of the ferry due to low water;
- Increase safety by separating ferry operations from watercraft access;
- Enhance recreational access and opportunities at the Green River crossing; and
- Provide better public service through longer hours of ferry operation.

Highlights:
1. It won't matter for cavers but it does matter for hikers accessing the area from the east (I-65)
2. No, they're not building a bridge. The low bridge option would not have met federal highway standards, and the high bridge option was deemed too intrusive.
3. The big concern seems to be the safety of canoeists (7000/year) and other boaters (500-1000/year).
