Ok guys and gals....(ahem).....time to bring some really profound musice to your ears:

"Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh (w/ the James Gang or Eagles, on DVD)

"Netherlands" by Dan Fogelberg. You have to listen to the lyrics and depth of the production to appreciate his emotin for being in the mountains.

Tunes once thought of that are difficult to shake: Jeopardy music, Mission Impossible, Bonanza, the Good the Bad and the Ugly Bridge over River Kwai.

Reggae, Concious hiphop, Bluegrass, anything funky that makes you feel like James Brown sounds. Also: "Ring of Fire" with Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan or "Born to Love Volcanoes" by The Dead Milkmen if you are climbing a Volcano. Special recommendation for after a long day, back in the car: "Ghost of Tom Joad" album by Bruce Springsteen.

An absolute aversion to any whisper of electronic noise in the backcountry, BUT

On a nominal hunting trip to the Wallowas in the 70s, my brother and I drove all night from Portland. He woke me up before sunrise with Pastoral as we started up the canyon above Elgin. Brilliant red-orange buttermilk sky sunrise. We wound up walking up to the top of the Lostine/Frances Basin Divide that morning. Remember the day with the music and the music with the day.

Also, some other classical music has been hijacked. It's obvious that portions of Firebird Suite, Stravinsky, are a bird of prey soaring through the gorges and canyons of Steen's Mountain on a very hot afternoon with wild thermals. Likewise the Grand Fugue in D Minor was clearly composed after Bach had a lengthy out-of-body experience involving the verticals of the Wallowas-Hell's Canyon area. Bolero has to do with swinging down a long steep ridge, getting closer and closer to camp, where the packed is dropped with a thud at the final note.

For long drives home from exhausting adventures, Cream, Hendrix, and the Boss are good for keeping spirits and eyelids elevated.
