Old Climbers and the routes they climb

by Gak Icenberg » Fri Nov 06, 2009 4:57 am

Does anyone out there know of any older climbers (70's or 80's or?) and the routes they are capable of? Maybe there are some here on SP.

I have a good friend who's father used to beat our buts up and down the mountains while we were Elk hunting when he was 85. He stopped hiking when he was 88 and is 92 now. Still in great shape..

Fortunately for me, I don't know any old climbers.

I was going to say Fritz Wiessner. He was soloing 5th class routes in the Gunks in his 70s/80s.

Weissner was doing 5.10's in his late 70's early 80's.

While Donini isn't old (he's only 65 or 66) but he leads 5.12 at Indian Creek on a regular basis and leads WI5/6 on a regular basis.

Tears too...

I like the way he kissed the stone when he starts, the cool way he recovers while looking at a 80 footer, and how he "helps" his foot up that extra bit near the end....... best of all, he's climbing with a young "chick"....

Beckey's been around since God wore shorts. I think he's in his late 80s. Beckey, that is.
