Palisades(6/6/11 - 6/11/11)

by oso1212 » Sun Jun 05, 2011 11:31 pm

I have a week that I'm spending in the Palisade area. Is anyone going to be up there?

My wife and I are still debating about doing North Palisade from North Fork Big Pine Crk approach vs. just spending a couple of days climbing Shasta. If we go, we'll be in Palisades area June 11-14.

Hi there. Did you spend your week on the North Fork? I am heading there with a group this Thursday and curious what the conditions are. We get a different story each time we talk to a ranger. What is the trail like up to First Lake? Do we need crampons or any special shoes up to First? I understand there is snow everywhere but some rangers have said the trail is clear...are there any dry sports around First Lake for place tents? Beyond that we fully expect snow, just wondering if we can get to the First Lake without special equipment other than the standard backpacking gear. Thanks much!!

Hi, the trip was great. The trail is clear to the option of going to either 1st Lake or Black Lake. I went by Black Lake both on the way in and way out and although the snow was deep in places I was wearing hiking boots the whole time. I never saw a trail after Black Lake or around the upper Lakes. I didn't use my mountaineering boots, ice axe or crampons except during my climb on Cloudripper. I didn't walk by 1st-3rd Lakes but I found a decently dry spot for my bivy at 4th Lake. You shouldn't have a problem with a tent at 1st Lake.
So, I'd say you are good to any of the Lakes without specialized equipment.

Oh yea, forgot to mention I saw a bear track in the fresh snow North of 6th Lake. He was headed right down toward 4th Lake and my food. Luckly, he didn't find it.

Thanks for the info! Makes me feel much better to have a recent report so we can be prepared. The BearVault will be doing its job. Thx!
