Picture Organization

How do you organize your photos? By trip, mountain, location or all of the above? I just do mine now by the location/city followed by month and year. This gets complicated when you travel a dozen times a year and do multiple hikes/climbs/mountains at a given location. Some I have labeled by mountain if it was the reason for a whole trip. By default I've been using Picassa as an editor and viewer but otherwise just store them in Windows.

I do it by region. But I create a folder structure for myself. So here's an example:

Desktop >> Photos >> North Cascades >> Washington Pass >> Silver Star Mountain

It's been working out pretty well. Don't sort by date because Picasa lets you search from newest to oldest anyways. I admit eventually it becomes a few clicks to get from the desktop, but it's still a time saver considering that I can find what I want very quickly. If I want resized pictures for posting on SummitPost it would be: Desktop >> Photos >> North Cascades >> Washington Pass >> Silver Star Mountain >> Exports

If it's a mountain I climb almost every year (Rainier) than I might make a folder in it's proper location (Rainier National Park) and then in the mountain folder have the date/trip report title for the folder. It's worked out quite well for me! :D

Many ways to skin a cat and there are duels about folder organisation vs. tagging but another advantage of using Lightroom/Aperture etc is that all photos are contained in one self contained catalogue. Very easy to backup etc. I prefer tagging to organising in folders. It allows for more sophisticated searches and with auto tags can be done quite quickly. I think keeping a separate folder for smalles size pics is a bit convoluted. I like just to keep the masters and resize and upload as required. Each to their own.

I do looove Lightroom though :)

By outing:

Using Flickr, everything is also identified by tags, titles and captions. Photos stored on a hard drive may as well be locked in a box somewhere.

I just got lightroom as well, and totally adore it! Very user friendly, easy storage and sorting, lets me keep all the data on the external harddrive, love it!

Geographic, by mountain or area. It's just the way I'm wired. I used to have my files at work organized geographically too (top drawer = North Slope, next drawer = Fairbanks area, and so on). But the staff mutinied.
