Possible California skiing anywhere?

by Blair » Wed Aug 18, 2010 8:53 pm

Hey all,

Yes It sounds crazy, but I am looking for some skiiable snow. I have from Aug 27-Sept 3 off and would like to go on a little road trip up north. The main goal is to ski something, be it some backcountry or maybe go to timberline lodge on hood, just to make some desired turns.

We will be doing some hiking and climbing on the way up and down on the trip.

I am asking for ANY recent pics of any skiiable snow that may be still out there if one doesnt mind working a bit.

Thanks in advance to everyone who can help us find some snow to ski. We have not missed a month yet this year and need to fill the aug and sept quota

You could do a short run on the Abbot glacier, alot of work for a short run though.

I was at Timberline Thursday hiking. There appeared to be quite a few skiers in addition to those in race camps. I do not know how to add a picture here so I just posted a picture among my images that shows the area where they are skiing. It looks like they are just skiing above the midway loading point. As you can see from the picture they are doing a lot of grooming. I think that they are still salting the snow so it holds up better. They are moving snow in a gullly so skiers can ski almost to the Lodge. By the time of your trip, it probably will be necessary to ride the lower lift down. I haven't skied on the snowfield recently, but I did for many years. The main problem off the groomed snow late in the season are sun cups and lava dust. Still, it can be a lot of fun.

If you would just as soon climb and ski, Mt. Bachelor probably will have some snow on the north side above the Pine Marten Lift. The lift runs until Labor Day so you could ride it and climb from the top. There was a lot of snow on Bachelor a month ago but I"m sure a lot has melted. They have some summer operations so someone would probably answer the phone if you called to inquire about the snow.

Sweet Adventure! We skied each month of 2005. Jan-June were easy here on the Eastside. July on Shasta was incredible! August we scored 1000 feet of suncup-free sweetness above Bennetville (near Tioga Pass) September sucked- chattery gnarliness on non-softened crap beneath Temple Crag. October and November both we found freshies-over-grass. December, believe it or not, we skied back east.
As for your original question:
I'd expect suncups wherever you go. And also realize that the most accessible snow in the Sierra is near Tioga Pass and Saddlebag Lake (Dana, Conness etc...)

No one takes it seriously because medical technology has not advaced enough to prevent us from dying before it is a real issue anyway.

So why bother with it?

Don't you read that if little or nothing is done, average temps will rise 10 degrees by 2100? 100's have died in Russia, just now, it might get into the 1000's later on, even here. It is an unstoppable event, as said, once it is past the tipping point, which it seems to be already. Whatever we may do, now, we'll all fry.

I have not read that, but as I said, I will be dead before 2100 anyway, as will all of us, and THAT is why no one really cares.

At least not enough to actually do anything.
