Auto play video pop up ads

by awilsondc » Sat Sep 16, 2017 6:19 pm

I've noticed auto play video pop up ads on the site lately. I must say these really grate my nerves. Are these going to become the norm? Hate to say it, but it's already becoming a deterrent to using the site.

I have seen them as well. I hope they don't become the norm.

Please make them stop, somebody. They are extremely aggravating.

Haven't seen any of those here. Perhaps I'm simply lucky, but I can also think of two other reasons:
- I've checked "Minimal Ads" in my profile
- A while ago, when adds in general became too annoying, I installed an add blocker (uBlock), which greatly reduced the number of adds that I get. Not only less annoying, but some sites load significantly faster as well, which I find especially useful when I'm traveling and relying on whatever wifi connection is available.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work.

The only thing that works is to close summitpost and enjoy a different website. Why has this not been eliminated yet?

I emailed Matt about this.

I haven't seen the videos today though. Maybe it was fixed?

I'm away from the computer and using a phone, so I don't see the ads, but can someone screen shot the ads and post some here?

Thanks.

These ads are still a problem. I even had one pop up when I was trying to write a page for the site. I don't think I can take it anymore.

Have you installed an ad blocker?

Why is it that we have to choose between horrendous ads or not supporting sites?

The way I see it, ads are instruments to persuade people to buy something or to get their support for something. With that in mind, I believe it's shortsighted and stupid to try to sell me something by first annoying me, but apparently some advertisers don't see it that way. Maybe they didn't think about it, maybe their research showed them that there was still a positive effect from an annoying ad.

The reason we have to choose is because (some) advertisers don't respect us anymore. To get our attention, (some of) the ads are designed to be more and more obnoxious simply to make them harder to ignore - sometimes even significantly slowing down the site that I'm trying to view. If there were no intrusive ads, I would have no problem accepting them and thereby supporting sites that I like. It's up to the advertising industry to come up with a solution. They caused the problem in the first place.
