Hey everybody! Guys, I am new to hiking and would like to ask how do you guys deal with lack of mobile connection?

Its not a problem since I don't rely on digital communication devices. I just realize that I'll be out of contact, rescue might not be an option, and I make my decision of routes, pitches, and obstacles based on my knowledge, experience, and skill. Its called risk management.

I purposely do not bring communication devices when I climb. If you feel that communication in the backcountry is necessary to your experience, you should consider a different hobby. Not that modern communication devices have not saved lives and expedited rescues, but you should go into the back country with the philosophy that you are self reliant, shit happens, and if you can't handle the shit then you could end up in a very bad situation.

I just read that the family of the climber who died on MT. Hood is suing for $10 million because it took FOUR hours from the time the first 911 call went out to when the first helicopters arrived.

Think about that. There are people who expect the same response time from a 911 call in the city as the side of a mountain. When the Sheriff received the call he had to alert Portland Mountain Rescue, the Crag Rats, and the military. Four hours for a military response is incredibly fast. There's no helicopter stationed at Government Camp ready on a moment's notice to rescue climbers.

Sorry, just had to rant. Bring your cell phone, it may work in some areas. The most reliable safety policy is to leave a written, detailed itinerary of your plans with someone who loves you (spouse, parent, SO).

Include all pertinent information including were you plan to park, the make, model, and license plate # of the vehicle, ETA, and very importantly, when to call the authorities. I give myself a 24 hour window past the time I am expected back before instructing my wife to call the authorities. Include WHO to call (relevant Sheriff department, ranger station, etc.) in event of non return.

Amen! I "deal with lack of mobile connection" by feeling more relaxed and attentive to the world around me. It is nice to be out of touch -- it reminds me of the days before cell phones, when people didn't expect you to always be available. It was a more civilized age.

I reluctantly carry an emergency beacon now, but still have the attitude that it's on me to make it back to the trailhead, and if I can't, someone will eventually find the bones.

Oh, C'mon guys !!! You NEED a mobile communication device every time you venture into the creepy backcountry

Why? Because when you prepare and cook your backcountry meal, it MUST be shared with everybody on FB, including Martha Stewart who will leap with joy after seeing what you have prepared for yourself. Please, never let Martha down .... or she might send 'Snoop Dog' after you ...

I'm Pretty new as well. I don't think so why you need a mobile device? well if you are looking for communication device maybe your should try Satelite phone?

Well, I go hiking not only for pleasure, but it's connected with my work. That's why I must be online almost every time.
