Although it has been many years since New York State fire towers were manned, the “Fire Tower Challenge” has grown into quite a popular objective among the NYS hiker subset.

In a nutshell, there are 25 restored fire towers (originally 23) in the Adirondacks and 5 in the Catskills. Fire Tower Challenge aspirants must hike to the summits of 18 in the ‘Dacks and all 5 in the Catsills to meet club requirements and receive a patch.

It’s a cool list. No major heavy lifting. Have done all 30. Takes you all over the Adirondack and Catskill Parks. Lots of fun.

I remember seeing want adds for employment as a watchman in fire towers in Pennsylvania in the 1970's. I don't know what has become of them. Scramblingbadger has a little note about one in the Black Hills.

I'm just going off of the one photo there, but is a chain-link and barbed wire enclosure really necessary?
