Glacier Notch Difficulty/Feasibility

by mountainnick » Mon Jun 13, 2022 8:02 pm

Hello!

I am leaving to hike the southern half of the Sierra High Route this upcoming weekend and I have added a few summit attempt additions on the way. I'd like to get from the top of Mt. Sill to the Palisade Glacier over Glacier Notch (GN), but I'm not seeing much information about navigating through GN. I'm trying to limit my climbs to class 3 and lower, so if (as I might have read somewhere) GN is class 4, then I'll walk around. Does anyone have good beta about crossing GN from the south towards the glacier? I attached a route map for reference. The green track is what I would like to attempt.

Thanks in advance.
Nick

I've done that. It's class 3 on both sides. The South side is easier and blocky, the North side is very loose. You most likely have to be on snow for a while, so bring an ice axe.
