Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but could you tell me which is the highest mountain in Europe, or how might I find this out for myself?

Interesting Question and not stupid.
There are two opinions, the first is that The Mont Blanc is the highest, the second opinion is the Elbrus.
The Elbrus is on the european site of the Caucasus and so its the highest Mountain.
And so the Mont blanc is still the highest in the Alps.

The general opinion is that Elbrus is the highest in Europe.

Elbrus is the one that counts if you're chasing the Seven Summits.

Mont Blanc, because I´ve been up that one and not Elberus!!

The border of Europe is Ural-Range - Ural-River - Caspian Sea - Black Sea - Bosporus - Marmara Sea - Dardanellen

Elbrus is between Caspian Sea and Black Sea. This part of the border is heavy under discussion. One experts say that the border ist the caucasus range and Elbrus. Other say that the border is Manytsch-valley northwards.

It isn´t possible to get a clear answer, because the eurasian border was changed many times and it will be changed one day again.

We couldn´t give a clear answer of this question with our secondary knowledge. But the main opinion in mountaineering is that Elbrus is the highest. Some years ago it was different.

Climb both! And if you want to create a list with the highest peaks of the continents you have to mention both with the advice of the unclear border situation.

It is not the question if the whole western old sovjet-part is in europe or not, it is only the question of where is the border between Black Sea and Caspian Sea. There is the border, on Mount Elbrus or northwards.
