mont canigou

by Dan Bailey » Thu Oct 19, 2006 12:22 pm

It's less than 2 hours from my Wife's parent's house. I'd like to climb it with her around Christmas. It doesn't seem to have a page on summitpost. I guess it's likely to be quite snowy, and not the best period for decent weather and daylight. But it looks great from the plain, so I'll definitely give it a go given the right weather. I'm having trouble finding info on routes, bivvi huts etc. Are there guidebooks or other websites available?

Bearing the Missus in mind I'm looking for something not too taxing, F or PD. Preferably a ridge for the lower avalanche risk, though if there are some nice couloirs i'd like to hear about them too.

Also, any recommendations for other nice winter peaks in the eastern Pyrenees would be appreciated.

Merci

The best map and guide about Canigó of Sua edizioak: Canigo (Miguel Angulo & Nuria Garcia)
The massif of Canigó had another interesting mountains as Costabona, Rojá... if you had bad luck with the weather conditions or the snow. You had another options in this map and guide. The Canigó had 2784m and generally in winter many days the snow begin in Pyrenees about 2000m (or less if recent snowfall in the valleys in december).
If you can to climb you can visit the monasterys, castles, naturals enviroments,...

This area of Pyrenees is so far away for me and I don't know much about this mountains except for my books and maps but it seem beautifull. I've seen Canigó from the roads of Catalonya and is a nice mountain in a vey wide plain.

Some links (text in spanish and catalan):

Good luck
