Peruvian Andes in December /January

by maverick » Wed Oct 17, 2007 5:57 pm

I might fly to Peru for a couple weeks in December and was thinking about attempting an 18,000'+ peak while I'm there. I haven't climbed anything above 14,400' and just have some basic snow skills from Winter 14ers in Colorado (no experience with glaciers/crevasses). I'd really appreciate any recommendations as to peaks I could attempt in the Peruvian Andes. Is the weather manageable in December? Thanks for any information.

Can't speak for December, specifically, but it was pretty sloppy when I was there many January's ago.

Arequia region-yes (but still not as good as April-November). If you go to Peru it would be the only practical area to climb a mountain at that time of year (Dec-Jan).

The rest of the country (ie the Cord. Blanca)-no.

I'm headed to the Arequipa region in a few weeks.

Otherwise, head north to Ecuador, Venezuela, and/or Colombia; or south to Argentina and/or Chile.
