Skeeters in the Sierra 2009*

The Skeets were terrible this weekend on the Pine Creek Trail. I can't say DEET encouraged them, but running was the most effective deterrent.

They were not so bad on the Horton Lake Trail. Hell, they did not even bother me midday at Horton Lake.

Still bad on the west side yesterday in Blackcap Basin and environs. They would swarm when I stopped to take sand out of my shoe or pause for any reason. The more aggressive ones would attack while hiking. Two applications of DEET through the day weren't enough.

Many years back we noticed a slothiness in Adirondack toads. Wonder if it's the same issue?

Maybe us hordes of DEET wearing blood meals are selecting for DEET resistant Mosquitos. Only the ones that get by it can feed and breed. Eventually only NOT wearing DEET will keep them away

I was at Grass Lake near Meysan Lake at the beginning of July and the mosquitos were not too bad there - only a problem in the evening by the water.

I was at Charlotte Lake last week and they are pretty bad in some areas. We had to completely cover up to avoid them. Vidette Meadow is also gnarly, especially by Bubbs Creek, but that probably comes as no surprise.

That's because Martha is possibly the center of the spiritual and metaphysical universe. What an amazing place.

Skeeters are god-awful at Lake Edison and trails up that way (Mono Creek, Bear Ridge Trl, PCT near Mono crossing, etc.). Rough, but not as bad in Bear Creek drainage. Manageable up the Hilgard Branch. Non-existent up at Lake Italy.

Just got back from Grass Lake in the Meysan Lakes area and the skeeters were pretty bad. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being unbearable, I would give it an 8. There were out at all hours and obviously especially bad at dusk. Meysan Lake wasn't too bad at all from what we experienced.

Rock Creek- Ruby Lake was 4 out of 10 on the 'kill me now' scale. Not too bad at all. It is survivable for sure.

Only near the Lakes en route to Langley from Horseshoe Meadows.
Sure glad I had my nerd 'skeeter headgear. They were lining up to bite me through my antique Capilene!

Headed up to look at the approach to Conness' west ridge this morning - the mosquitoes were out in force and hungry !! It was pretty marshy in places so this isn't really unexpected ..
