Lightweight SoftShell Pullover?

by Kai » Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:26 pm

I have lost one of my favorite pieces of gear, a Patagonia softshell pullover (their original Talus pullover) and I can't find a replacement.

Does anyone know of a company that makes a lightweight stretch-woven (Shoeller)softshell pullover without a full length zipper?

I have found zillions of full-zip jackets, but I'm looking for a light weigh low bulk option.

Backcountry has exactly what you are looking for.

I got mine on steep and cheap for like $50. I'm 5.9, 175 and the large fits me great, loose enough to go over a midweight thermal top, tight enough to layer over.

Arcteryx Gamma LT Pullover

uses Arcteryx's Fortius fabric, which is supposedly similar to Schoeller Dynamic

This sounds like exactly what you want:

The MH Transition top. I have the half-zip and the tights (which are trim-cut pants and not really tights), and I love them. The fabric is Gore Windstopper softshell, and it's extremely thin and light. But, it's 100% windproof, durable, highly stretchy, and deals well with light rain.

I've worn this on many bike rides from 30º to 70º, with nothing to a light wool or Capilene layer underneath and by putting on a heavier underlayer I plan on riding and climbing well into the winter with it. It's my most versatile piece of clothing by far.

Note that it's cut like a shirt. If you want to fit fleece under it you'll have to order up a size.

Just an FYI, several different softshell pullovers have been making the rounds on Steep and Cheap lately.

It comes down to how much you want to pay?

Can buy a $20 fleece pullover along with a running nylon windbreaker for $15, works just like a "softshell" but far more versatile and breathable.

Unless of course you really really have to have that marmot or north face logo on it to be properly cool...
