I was quite impressed with the Patagonia Speed Ascents when I did try them on, I passed on them as the store at the time only had mediums or x-larges and the Large would have fit me perfectly - Now the store's sold out and not getting any more.

So, I was trying to find Speed Ascents that can ship to Canada but overall, was just wondering if there's others out there with comparable warmth. Time has come to finally replace my really old MH softshell pants as they're falling apart. I don't mind putting a capline 3 or 4 under them, but lookin for something that keeps me relatively warm in our -40 and -50 degree (celcius) weather that I have to go out in anyway.

My mixmaster is really warm, but I never wore them at -40C. At that temperature, I don't know if any softshell will be warm enough with cap3, unless you are going out for a run. I also used winter guide pants to fairly cold temp (-15C).

I've used Mixmasters a lot - in Antarctica to -40C, on Aconcagua in -25C and in Tibet up to 6000m. They're great pants, but you need to keep moving and have it be not too windy. At those temps you really notice that Powershield is not 100% windproof (80%). But MM, or Winter Guides, are certainly the warmest softshell around. Most would throw on some synth overpants (MH Chugach/Trans?, Pata Puffball etc) after about -20C.

I also use Cold Fusion softshell pants from www.beyondclothing.com and they are usually too warm for summer and OK for light winter use.

Problem is, finding mix masters or winter guides for sale now is not an easy task. The speed ascents still seem to be the best option of what I can readily buy. Winter guides seem very similar to the newer speed ascents as well.

Champs are pretty darn warm.
