Just wondering how everyone goes about carrying their DSLR while in action. Holster bag on the hip belt? Top load bag in front? What's the best option for easy carrying and easy access?

I use a pretty simple toploader for my d700 and 24-70. I can strap it my backpack, belt, and even my harness if need be. It's a bit heavy to climb with, but it works.

Like a Lowepro TLZ? You have the same camera setup that I'm using.

I use something similiar to this:

Allows for quick access for those shots where time is of the essense.

I experimented with many carrying options, ended up with a Tamrac top-loader that I carry on my chest with the chest strap of whatever pack I'm wearing going through the belt-loop on the case. I use small bunjee cord (avail. at REI) that runs from the camera to a small caribiner on my pack's shoulder strap to prevent dropping the camera. This setup works well for me on anything up to class 3 climbing, and its extremely quick to get the camera out and grab that time-sensitive shot.Started out with the LowePro Cirrus top-loader, but I found the Tamrac to be much less bulky.

edit: grammar

I initially used a shoulder bag connected to my harness, but I have since switched to a holster system on a belt and am not looking back. It distributes weight nicely, goes above my harness, can be worn with a big pack on, stays generally out of the way and leaves everything very accessible. I have seconded WI5 with it and won't hesitate to use it on high 5th class rock when the weather allows it.

The one I use is the ThinkTank skin system. I put my D90 + 18-50 2.8 in the chimp cage and the Nikkor 70-300 VR in the strobe bag.

In the past I have used the expedition pockets on an aarn pack

..and this year I am hoping to try a holster system from cotton carriers.
