What's everyone doing January 15-18 over the holiday weekend?

We were thinking of heading to SE Utah. Some possibilities this time of year are Goblin Valley, Arches, Swett Creek, North Wash or Robbers Roost areas. I wouldn't mind doing some technical canyons, but wouldn't mind doing non-technical ones either if no one was interesed in technical ones.

Right now long term weather forecast are calling for good weather and daytime temperatures near 50 in those areas.

If no one was interested in the desert I guess I could climb some 14,000 foot peaks if people are more interested in that. Harvard/Columbia come to mind.

Utah sounds cool, but it's a little far...I don't want to drive more than 4 hours or so from Boulder that weekend to save a little $$$. A 14er would be nice. Columbia sounds inviting.

I could see utah or 14ers. I had been thinking quandary or something simple or else cedar mesa area. I would love to go death hollow / coyote later this spring. I'm not sure if it's to early for those.

Cedar Mesa is pretty high (6000-6500 feet), so the canyons are most likely snow-filled now. Quandary might be good.

You can do Coyote in winter or early spring, but forget about Death Hollow then. It would be pretty dangerous to attempt in winter/early spring. Death Hollow usually isn't "in season" until late May or June, but you can do it slightly earlier with a thick wetsuit.

Scott your the expert on Utah for sure. I could be totally fine with some narrow slot or narrow lush canyons

I'm comming out to CO that weekend and was looking at doing Quandary on Sat and Skiing Sun (Breckenridge or Keystone). Still have not booked a room so not sure where I will be staying but probably Breckenridge, Frisco/Dillion Area.

Tonka were you at the summer gathering ? I think we drank some beer at the pizza place. I could be up for some mountain stuff that weekend although I might prefer the canyons , I'm flexible

Yep, I was at the gathering. Heading out with my girl for the weekend. I hear snow conditions have sucked in the Summit County area. Is this true?

not sure I live on the west side of the state, snow is near normal here

Hmmm, the reports aren't encouraging.

Moab has a foot of snow and even the canyons around Lake Powell have 8 foot snowdrifts in the them. Moab hasn't even risen to freezing since December 13 and has only risen above 20 once this year. This morning was -14F and most nights have been well below zero for the last two weeks. Even Bluff Utah has 6-7 inches of snow. All this is quite unusual for SE Utah. This is good mountain weather, but not good canyoneering weather.

I called the Marble Canyon Lodge in Northern Arizona and in that area there is no snow and it has been dry. I may head down there, but it's a longer drive. Great area though.

Otherwise, I'm also considering some mountains in CO, but I really miss the desert canyons.

I know I'm digging canyon ideas myself. Not really a slot style canyon, but I might go explore gunnison gorge and black canyon some. They are pretty sweet in the winter and a bit of snow is expected.
