I need a good campfire story

by tigerlilly » Thu Jan 14, 2010 8:51 pm

Hey There!

We're taking a bunch of young-ins (8-10yrs olds) out for an overnight in a couple of months. I'm in charge of, you guessed it, campfire entertainment.

Do you have any good campfire stories, or songs? Would you be willing to share it? I've used up the two I know.

THANKS

Sorry E. I posted a story but I don't think the Elves liked it.

Is there a way to ban yourself?

The children's version, ie. condensed, of Jack London's, To Build a Fire. Excellent stuff.
Told a rough paraphrase of it once around a campfire and it had everyone silent afterward, looking into the fire.

Last time I did that, I waited until the kids were in the tents for a while, then growled and scratched the tent walls. It helped that the camp leaders had already explained about bears and not leaving food around, etc. But then this was somewhat past campfire time....

Ok, I'll be serious now. Are these kids little boys or girls? Makes a difference in the type/tone of the story. I once roomed with a couple of guys in a haunted house. Really, it was....but we didn't know it until we were in for a while. Stories are a bit long for the forum, but I can relate 'em offline if you like.

Do your ears hang low?
Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them o'er your shoulder
Like a Continental Soldier?
Do your ears hang low?

Do your ears hang high?
Do they reach up to the sky?
Do they wrinkle when they're wet?
Do they straighten when they're dry?
Can you wave them at your neighbor
With an element of flavor?
Do your ears hang high?

Do your ears hang wide?
Do they flap from side to side?
Do they wave in the breeze
From the slightest little sneeze?
Can you soar above the nation
With a feeling of elevation?
Do your ears hang wide?

Do your ears fall off
When you give a great big cough?
Do they lie there on the ground
Or bounce up at every sound ...

Can you stick them in your pocket
Just like Davy Crocket?
Do your ears fall off?

Does your tongue hang down?
Does it flop all around?
Can you tie it in a knot?
Can you tie it in a bow?
Can you throw it o'er your shoulder
Like a Continental Soldier?
Does your tongue hang down?

Does your nose hang low?
Does it wiggle to and fro?
Can you tie it in a knot?
Can you tie it in a bow?
Can you throw it o'er your shoulder
Like a Continental Soldier?
Does your nose hang low?

Do your eyes pop out?
Do they bounce all about?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them o'er your shoulder
Like a Continental Soldier?
Do your eyes pop out?

Gotta do the "Golden Arm":

Build it up as you will, the hero/thief/statue/king/queen/...
whose golden arm is the pride and joy/unique property/magical whatsis/...
that get's stolen, and he (she?) was desolate/enraged/unconsolable/...
asking "Who has my Golden Arm?" everywhere
wandering the land (repeat to appropriate length from say China to India to Turkey to Greece to Spain to Cuba to Alabama ...)
for years/decades/centuries/millenia/... (specify along with choice of place as you will),
optional here to add in carnage as the bereft one-armed figure becomes increasingly aggressive/violent/outrageous/...
until just recently when reported in nearest state/city/town/neighborhood/park/woods/... (pick up from earlier trajectory, and repeat narrowing as needed to just around the corner),
ever moaning/groaning/weeping/crying/whispering "Who has my Golden Arm?"

and when you've got them on the edge of their rocks

grab the nearest reasonably strong-charactered camper (careful whom you sit next to) while loudly proclaiming/yelling/shrieking/screaming/...

"YOU DO!"

Most effective of course if begun just at dusk and not finished until pretty dark,
OR
begun with the fire starting to diminish, down to coals by the finish,
etc. as you will.

Dramatic voicing requisite of course.

Now why can't I remember any of the many others, it's only been 55 years....

DON'T ASK!
:(  :o

I told a story a few years ago in Boy Scouts, scared the crap out of people. I pretty much just made it up as I went, talking about how a kid was angry with society and ran off into the woods, hacking off the limbs of animals to augment himself with their body parts, then when he was more animal than human, killing people in the night. The thing that made it scary was that as I went along, I told of the noises he made...which were an exact mimicry of the very noises I was hearing in the woods as I told the story. I will have to do that again sometime.

They are mostly boys. Some girl siblings get dragged along.

I usually read a good story from this book. It gets people scared!
