Two of the most imortant things I learned early about climbing photography are:

1. You can't take photos wtihout a camera
2. When the going gets tough, take photos

You can't take photos if your camera is packed away in your pack. You've got to keep your camera handy so that you can take photos. I use a small waterproof, padded camera bag that I can attach to my harness. The camera is always handy and ready to go. You can even tie the camera to the rope or haul bag and send it up to someone else.

When the conditions get grim, that's the time to pull out the camera. Many great photos are taken when the weather or conditions are terrible.

This is an excellent article - I can't wait to see the book! And I think it applies to a variety of outdoor photography situations not just alpine. Thanks for passing on the reference!

Fantastic pictures and great advice natt, the best article I've seen on the topic, I've forwarded it along to climbing/photographer friends and followed some of your advice and has motivated me to bring my dslr backpacking, and managed to produce a few good pictures on my last trip.
