Hiking, scrambling, climbing trees my whole life. Technical rock, snow, peakbagging a little under two years.

8 years. Did my first "climb" of an itsy bitsy peak on Vallee Blanche with rented boots and helmet, borrowed ice axe, harness and backpack and a raincoat over a bunch of bulky sweaters....but it was instant love and I've never looked back. (And yes, I've ditched the raincoat.)

I've been climbing regularly for less than a year. Been going once a year since I was 11, though.

I have been hiking/climbing since I was 6 years old. My Mom and Dad took me hiking when I was a baby, but I don't count that. I wasn't doing that on my own. So I guess that's roughly 15 years.

I dig this line. As a part-time guide, I still take young folks hiking and climbing and whatnot and sometimes take shit for my age. My personal variation on this line is "I was getting laid while you were breast-feeding."

Climbing? About twenty years. With rope... about sixteen.

Guess it depends on what you consider climbing:

Started climbing mountains 37 years ago.
Started snow climbs/winter camping 35 years ago.
Roped climbing: 30 years ago.

I just took too much time off now and then to ever get good at anything!

First, gear: For the first 7 years (mountains/snow), blue jeans and a down jacket. Didn't even know about crampons and axes until I had been doing snow climbs for 3-4 years.

First technical gear I used: gold line, tied swami's, and stacked biners for rappels.

No idea what you're talking about! All the guys I know named after "rocks" have rocks in their brains! I'm sure you're the exception, of course. :P

That's my complaint about anything that I do. Or,

Fail. You're gonna get n00b flak for at least another six to twelve months.

PS, only n00bs spell it using the "o" key.
