Baldy Confidential

by graham » Sun Feb 14, 2010 4:37 am

Since Mt Baldy is within eyesight of ~25 million SoCal folks it’s bound to see some wacky stuff.
Here’s a small taste of some of the neat stuff you can see/do on Mt Baldy….god I love Mt Baldy :D :D :D

Dream of breaking the land speed record by riding a blue plastic saucer down the Baldy Bowl
Image

Join the March of the Penguins up some snow filled bowling alley
Image

Do a 4x4 pushup on the summit
Image

Break a watermelon open with an ice axe
Image

Enjoy a wilderness experience
Image

Camp on top
Image

Have a yard sale on the summit
Image

Practice self-arrests on the North side of Baldy
Image

Get some mega glissades
Image

Try to find a parking spot…or your car after 1pm
Image

Scorch your brake pads
Image

…..and so much more 8) :)

Good stuff Graham...The only thing you missed was an encounter with the Aetherians (do they hibernate?) anyway... look at the mob scene on Mt. Blanc...

For the whole story:

I think the Aetherian’s prefer the comforts of summer time weather, the ski lift, and some space station filled with un-earthly libations :)

I’ve hiked up Baldy probably a couple hundred times over the last ~45 years and still enjoy getting up there as much as I can….guess I’m a YUK-aholic

Good chronicle of the day on good ol' Baldy, Rick. It was nice to run into you on the summit. With all the people up there, the odds were favorable to see a familiar face!
The run down was a blast, too. I think that's the closest I've ever come to a continuous summit-to-ski hut glissade of the bowl! 8)

LOL There were some ambulances and fire trucks racing up the road when we drove down around 1pm. Guess some clown fell again.

Not funny but more sad. Each and every time a horde of people go up there, some sort of accident happens. Everyone can make a mistake but 90% of these accidents are people that do not have the skills or experience to go up the bowl. It's getting really old and puts the lifes of rescuers and other first responders on the line...

People do occasionally get hurt in the bowl, but it was more likely a sledding/snowplay accident at Manker. Back and head injuries are a pretty standard deal on weekends at the Flats when there's snow to be had.

Dave's right. it probably was someone barreling into a tree, sign, fence or parked car with a makeshift sled at Manker. It's always like that when there is a even a little snow up there.

Even so, still annoying. It would be nice if people had a little more common sense. They should just let natural selection take its course
