Baldy for Dummies v1

by jspears0001 » Thu Mar 18, 2010 4:29 pm

Ok, sorry for the stupid question but I've hiked Baldy 3-4 times by either under the ski lift (up the fire road) or Bear Canyon. I've always wanted to go up via the Bowl but can't find the start of the trail.

Can someone please help me out and post a picture of the spot you bail off the road to start the trail to the ski hut? You can PM me as well.

Thanks

Doug, don’t sell yourself short, a 2:35 up Bear Flats trail is an excellent time. Plus those other hikes are nice and burly too. Congrats 8)

About a ¼ mile up the dirt road from the waterfall vista you should see this turn-off on the left side of the fire road.
This is the start of the trail to the Sierra Club cabin at the base of the Baldy Bowl. About 200' up this trail you should pass a trail register.
Currently, there may not be as much snow.

To make it even easier, a tree fell across the road just past where the trail splits off. Pretty hard to miss now.

I went up on Thursday too...I think we headed up around 7am...Conditions are still good if you start early enough, I wouldn't start any later than that...It was very warm most of the time, except for the summit which had some gnarly fun winds :)

If you do happen to start later, I would avoid the center routes as they are more prone to rock fall from warming weather...

We went up Sunday 3/28, there is very little snow below the ski hut. Didn't need to put crampons on until the ski hut. It was warm so it did start to get slushy, but there was plenty of snow in the bowl and on the summit.
