Tioga Pass opening 2010

by rhyang » Thu May 13, 2010 5:56 am

I see the old thread by Deleted User is gone (or perhaps just temporarily hidden) and everyone's bets with it.

Anyway, current progress as of May 12 -

Crew currently at Visitor Center: 38.6 plowed miles of 42 miles. Plowing continues Monday - Saturday. Average Snow Depth is 4 to 6 feet. Plowing operation will continue today.

So only 3.4 miles to go? I would think it could be open by Friday or Saturday. Well, I was May 20th so that'll be too late.

you might be close... this from the NPS website tonight:

"The Tioga Road (Highway 120 through the park) and Glacier Point Road are closed. They usually reopen in late May or June, but there is no estimated opening date available."

I think there would be an estimated date if it were to open this week. After they plow they fart around paving patches of road and doing various maintenance and repairs. I drove over Sonora Pass the weekend it opened last year, and it was pretty clear that they didn't open it as soon as the snow cleared (there was only snow on the roadside maybe 5 miles, never more than 2 feet deep, and several stretches of new asphalt).

The thread is here, but as usual staying in limbo when the originator is deleted!

Hmmm...so what should I expect for a June 25th backpack/climb to Young Lakes/Ragged Peak/Mt. Conness?

I would expect snow at the higher elevations :)

Saw an update last night on the NPS site -- they said plows had gotten to Tioga Pass and now they had to widen the road, etc. This morning the site had reverted to Friday's status (41.4 plowed miles of 42 miles).

btw Usually they open the road to cyclists before cars. A friend wants to ride the entire Tioga Road and is looking for partners. Anybody game ? (not me, I just mountain-bike .. slowly :) )

Word on SuperTopo and Yosemitenews.info is that they're trying to open the pass by Memorial Day weekend. Who knows, though?

No idea what the park itself will say -- perhaps you might call them up and ask yourself. But every year there's a thread like this on SP and supertopo and probably other forums. Sometimes people post pics of the signs and/or their rides. Like I said, I'm not a road rider. Use the search Luke :)

I will be doing the same trip 3 weeks later, I'd like to hear how your trip goes.

The road is punched through, and Mono County equipment and workers are actually in the Park helping to widen the plowed portion. They did have a big slide on Olmsted and have to re-clear that. This from a friend who drives equipment for the County and was up there all this week.
