that's a bit over-generalization, don't you think? most climbers are cranky straight-talkers with very dry sense of humor, but generally are very nice. knee-jerk reaction off-putting posts usually receive bad treatment...

Maybe your right, but I have met one to many climbers in real life to generate my own stereotype for "Climbers". Either that, or they look down on beginners, as I'm still new to "rock climbing" and trying to get more experience.

That said, I have met some great climbers who are very cool and I look up to. So there are many good ones too. (I just tend to remember the more loud vocal arrogant ones.)

And also forum posts are not always representative, of the community as a whole or even the individual posting them.

For some, and in part your age (and my age), that is the smarter route. I've chatted with one SPer that is a lot younger and he has jumped in with both feet and very quickly doing some very challenging peaks. But he did take a class or two and he's in his 20"s. That makes a difference.

As for the "crap" that fellow SPers may gives us "NooBs", I've received my share of it and I think for the most part it was a "hazing" more than anything. Some of it I deserved, I spouted off, I've given others here, crap as well and all in good fun. I read all the posts here, I think the guy did deserve some of what he got, was a little arrogant. But over all everybody here has been great, many offers to teach me so that I can do more than just class 3, to do snow climbs with crampons etc, and even some rock climbing.

To those that weren't joking around and the crap was serious- screw all of you. :)

That's either two disgruntled SPrs who got bad news in the mail, NO WHITNEY WILDERNESS PASS, or they're liberals finding out that Obama raised their taxes too.

I have had a completely different experience.

Hikers, Backpackers & Climbers are some of the most down to earth people I know, some of my best friends.

Hikers and backpackers yes, climbers, not in my experience. I guess I haven't been doing it long enough.

I've met some pretty mean climbers in Squamish recently that have the whole adreneline junky bad-ass persona about them. Somewhat annoying that they are just doing it to look cool.

But, there are others out there that are awesome people, down to earth, willing to help out a noob like myself, etc.

The jerks are probably Califronia transplants, we keep the good people down here and ship off the aholes to Washington and Oregon. :)
