Looking for a name

by vanman798 » Wed Jun 02, 2010 8:26 pm

From the top of Sundial Peak I was looking due east and spotted the couloir in the picture below. I'm trying to figure out if it has a name. Do you know? thanks.

It looks like Heart of Darkness but it’s hard to tell from this angle.

It does sort of look like that, but everything I can find on-line seems to associate the Heart with Monte Cristo... same neighborhood but the picture is more of a distant neigbor to Monte Cristo and not a next door neighbor... Any idea of the "exact" location of the Heart of Darkness?

That one is coming off the Reed and Benson Ridge into Mineral Fork, and so isn't Heart of Darkness despite the similar appearance; I don't recall the name (or if it has one) off the top of my head, but I have a photo of the same view:

Heart of Darkness is indeed closer to Monte Cristo. It's the crack on the left of this one, which I took from the point where the Sundial ridge intersects the Cottonwood Ridge:

Compare that photo to, e.g., the first one in this post, to see that they match: http://tetonsandwasatch.com/wordpress/?p=62#more-62

They are different couloirs but look similar. I’ve only noticed that couloir mentioned during a summer traverse of Reed and Benson Ridge. It doesn’t have a name that I am aware of.

Sean thanks for the information and the pictures. I agree with you and mountaingazelle that this couloir is not named.

I'm going to infer from it's lack of name, that it's not skiable?

cheers!

Hey, I just realized not only do I have a clearer photo of it, but you were actually there on this trip!

If that's skiable, it at least needs to be more filled in...

Yep :)

Oh, and I screwed up, Reed and Benson is one more to the east. This one is Cardiac Ridge. Sorry if I confused other people besides myself.

Yes the couloir with name in question is on the Cardiac Ridge (on it's westerly aspect), and the point right of the couloir is point 10634 at N 40.60261 W 111.66804. Where as the point in the foreground, on the right, (covered in snow) is point 10481 at N 40.60001 W 111.67457 (above the Room of Doom). I'll try to remember to check Chuting Gallery to see if Mclean mentions it.
