Do they make little GPS beacon thingies to put on a dog collar? that way if you lose your dog, you just look for the blinking beacon on some ipod app?

The picture shows two things: The gps unit you carry that shows where the dog is and the dog collar with transmitter and antenna. The dog collar unit doesn't look that big, but it probably wouldn't do for a small dog.

If your city-dog is so "irresponsible" that he will run off and get "lost", you need a smarter dog (or he needs a smarter owner, not a $600 GPS tracking device. Dogs are not children.
These tracking devices are for HUNTING DOGS that are trained to track and tree a racoon or perhaps a mountain lion or bear. The dog moves so much faster than the hunter, that the "modern" hunter uses a tracking device to simplify the task of finding the dog (and raccoon). The dog is not lost at all.

If there's cell phone coverage where you take your dog, get them a cell phone and track that on the net. It'd be a hell of a lot cheaper than a $600 tracking device.

The "modern hunters" I saw using this device were not trying to keep up with their dogs. They were sitting in the bar at a mountain lodge waiting for the dogs to tree a bear. Apparently the device sends out a signal when the dogs start barking like mad.

I don't know. People lose dogs all the time around here. I lost one on a hike today in the woods, but found the beastie.

Someone should make an iphone app for lost dogs... with a teensie tiny gps unit you can attach to the collar. When you lose your dog on a hike, pull out your iphone and voila. Rover is in the parking lot at the head of the trail waiting for you.

Perhaps Rover needs a collar on his owners so he knows where they are and how long he'll have to wait for them to get back to the trailhead.

We use a leash.

Actually, it's an equine lunge line because (1) the dog is on the large side, and (2) lunge lines are cheaper.
