coming to CO

by dien2liv » Thu Jun 24, 2010 7:13 pm

So for two years i have been planning a trip to RMNP with my dad. then i blew my shoulder out climbing and the trip got delayed a year. so now the trip is in 3 weeks and i still have 8 days left to plan for. going to do the longs cirque the first week, but i am daunted with an over abundance of things to do after that. so what should i plan to do for that eight days (mind you my father is a novice to rock climbing but is in good shape). it doesnt have to be RMNP but somewhere within 3hrs drive from denver, id like to bag at least one more peak but im open to any suggestion and just looking for guidance. i am by no means a badass but i like the challenge and the remote outdoors so feel free to indulge me. any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

dien2liv,

If you have never been to 14ers.com you should start there. RMNP is awesome and Longs will be great but if you want to bag another 14er, you will have to drive straight west from Denver. CO is loaded with places worth visiting as you probably know but I would scout the peaks/routes closest to Denver and your father and you should be able to find several good options. If it's 14ers you are after, the closest few to Denver are Evans, Bierstadt, Grays, and Torreys. Use the 14ers map and it will narrow them down for you. If you don't care about 14ers, your options really are endless and you shouldn't have to drive far at all. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Sounds like a good place to start. We are camping in the boulder field on longs for 3 days to do the keyhole and meeker ridge. I'm really looking for some other quality areas for class 3 climbing.

Here's an old thread that may be of some interest to you. It mostly covers scrambles. Is that what you are looking for?

Curious as to where you're coming from and how you're getting to Colorado. Three days at 12,700 ft. in the Boulder Field sounds like a very long time to me. Have you been up there before?
