Southwest Absaroka conditions??...

by hellroaring » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:24 pm

2 ?'S: anyone know how much snow is sticking around up in the Absaroka high country in Wyoming, specifically in the Glacier Basin area in the Washakie/Teton Wilderness?? In approx. 2 weeks would like to try what looks to be a great traverse along the crest between Ishawooa Cone & Overlook Peak and then out to the Trident Plateau. Was thinking to carry an ice axe, a 30 M skinny rope, and just a smattering of gear to go with snow, or low snow would mean unburdening myself and my partner of these items so i was curious if anyone had an idea of the current snow conditions and with that in mind also what the river crossings might be like.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone know of someone (perhaps yourself!) who has ever traversed the entire length of Wapati Ridge in the same area?? Thanks for any beta on this...

I just spent 5 days in the North and SE Absarokas - the snow is disappearing fast and I think in two weeks you should be fine...

Haven't done the Wapiti Ridge yet - looks fun!

I'm in the Dunoir Valley. On July 4th from Mt. Leidy I could see Younts and Thorofare still had significant snow. Terrace still had good snow. I live in the Dunoir Valley and can tell you there is still decent snow on the Buffalo and Ramshorn Plateaus. Crescent Mt. still has nice cover.

Stream flows however came down some time ago and it has been dry and breezy for a long time. I'd still want to wait a week or so before even trying to go over Cougar or Pierpont. I plan on hiking Austin Peak on the 21st or so and will take some pics.
