3rd Party Opinion on Summit Post & Mount Shasta Accident

by Kadee » Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:09 pm

Has anyone else come across this?
http://www.informativesports.com/Other/0410/Shasta.htm

I am not going to go into detail of why this article upsets me, but I thought I should share this third parties opinion with my "community".

Also, it seems this guy must like the photos that are shared here on SP, but cannot give credit where credit is due.

Didn't have time to read it but judging from his last paragraph, the guy seems like a douche. IMO, anyone bashing someone publicly is an ass. If you have a problem with a guy, confront him in person...

He's not just a douche, but a used one found in the trash outside a Vegas whore house.

Inaccurate from beginning to end.

Full of inaccuracies and lies. Just using it as a personal attack for something and people that get under his skin for some reason still unknown to me.

Yeah, I can see how this would get peoples blood boiling. On top of that, it's a good thing our English teachers are climbing out west. This asshole would get an F.

An excerpt....

Summitpost is a social website for climber’s that tries to be an online community and gathering place for those who love the hills. Unlike the encyclopedic and excellently put together Colorado 14ers website -- 14ers.com, however, getting your climbing beta from Summitpost is a bit of a crapshoot. Summitpost is like Wikipedia, just because there is a great deal of information on there doesn’t mean it’s true or reliable. That’s sort of dangerous when it comes to climbing high mountains. Anyone can adopt a route or a mountain and become its “owner”. Just like the internet itself, there is no truth or fact-checker to keep things from straying into mythology or biased opinion. Inaccuracies and exaggerations are rampant in its pages. There is a Forum section where anyone from real mountain guides to armchair wannabes can offer you advice. For the most part, users remain primarily anonymous, where they can hide behind whatever clever façade or image they’ve built through their profile and “avatar”. They can make friends, chat, talk smack, and even flirt with one another, whatever the case may be. Unlike other sites, however, being completely anonymous is not necessarily required or even desired in many cases. Most users still try to create quirky and inventive usernames, that may give them some kind of distinction from their fellow members or that may something about their own special personalities. On their profile pages, on the other hand, that’s where they can put their real name and photos, usually of them doing something heroic and manly climbing up rock or mountain.

Wow. Sounds like he is filling his own need for ego-boosting by blasting this site and it's members. Funny how he never once mentions any decisions that the deceased may have taken part in. Somehow, once you die on a mountain, everything becomes your partners' fault.

The author of this "Informative Sports" piece immediately ruins any credibility he had with his audience as a result of his nasty, childish, personal attacks on Wombat & Bob.

It's ok to be critical of and have opinions on SummitPost, mountaineering, peak bagging, whatever...but to do so in a way that is constructive is appreciated. To do so in a mean-spirited (and highly hypocritical fashion) proves no point and adds zero value.

This guy has just got a bone to chew. Let him fester in his own corner of the internet universe.

Attacks on all of us. For example:

some douche wrote:Using the Trip Report, users on Summitpost pound their chests and say to the world “Look what I’ve done”. It’s all about the testosterone. He who does the most radical, daring, or physically challenging escapade is the winner. This is the culture that is fermented on the site. Instead of developing an appreciation and respect for the mountains, users are funneled into a contest of who can bag the most peaks in the fastest amount of time.

That is simply and completely untrue, at least in the California and Pacific Northwest forums. He's making it up.

Agreed. I haven't seen anyone drooling over other members. And where's the flirting this guy goes on about?

I also like the way he assumes that the "Trip Report" is the ultimate portion of this site. I've read a few, written less, and consider them to be the weakest part of SP unless you are just starting out, or unless the author is a truly gifted writer, unlike the author of this piece.
